What is the Internship & Career Pathways Program?

Say Yes Buffalo, area businesses and organizations, and local colleges and universities have partnered to create a paid internship program specifically for Say Yes Buffalo Scholars. Thanks to a generous grant from Citi Foundation we are expanding the program to include more opportunities and programming for Say Yes Scholars. In addition to connecting students with paid internships and providing mentoring throughout their internships, we also provide support to help students develop resumes, cover letters, and polish their interviewing skills. There is programming available to all Say Yes Scholars to help them along their career paths, including employer tours and access to our professional clothing closet.

How can I be eligible for a Say Yes internship opportunity?

To be eligible for a Say Yes internship opportunity you must:
1. Have graduated from a Buffalo Public School after June of 2013 and currently attend college and be in good academic standing.
2. Have completed one full year of college by the internship start date.
3. Have developed a professional resume and cover letter and worked with staff in your college’s internship or career services office to gather expert feedback and guidance to polish both (Click here to find contact information for your college’s career center)
4. Choose the internship opportunities in which you have interest. Positions are limited – we encourage you to apply for multiple internship opportunities.

Why should you apply for an internship?

1. You get paid professional work experience that is different from what you get from a typical part-time job.
2. Internships are a great way to explore potential career paths related to your major!
3. Paid internship experiences make your resume stand out to future potential employers.
4. Internships allow you to network with professionals in your field of choice.
5. You’ll have opportunities to connect with other interns and network with your peers.

By applying through Say Yes Buffalo for an internship, what am I agreeing to?

  1. You are agreeing to have Say Yes Buffalo forward your application materials (e.g. your resume) to the organization to which you are applying, as well as your career center and professional supports.

  2. You are agreeing that your college career center has permission to follow up with you to help assist you in the application/interviewing process and receive information about the results of your application, including whether or not you are hired and if you successfully complete your internship.

  3. You understand that you are not guaranteed an internship. You must be offered an interview and hired, just like any job application process.

  4. You are agreeing to be contacted by Say Yes staff via phone, email, or text. Contacts can be regarding edits to your application or to check-in on your internship.

  5. You are agreeing to have regular contact with Say Yes staff if hired for an internship. The Student Outreach Supervisor will be in regular contact to ensure you are having a positive experience and to discuss any concerns you may have.

  6. You are agreeing to report to Say Yes staff any concerns regarding your internship or ability to complete your internship.

  7. If your internship is held over the summer, you are agreeing to participate in at least three out of six professional development workshops.

  8. You are agreeing to attend the End of Summer Luncheon held in August.

As an intern, what type of support will I receive from Say Yes?

  1. Our program is more than just helping you find paid internships! You also get support preparing for your internship and throughout the internship itself!

  2. Resume and cover letter feedback (Please note: This does not replace making an appointment with your career center).

  3. Hired interns attend a Professional Skills Seminar prior to the start of the internship to help prepare for the first day.

  4. The Student Outreach Supervisor will check in regularly to ensure that students are having a positive internship experience and provide any needed guidance. Students are also encouraged to reach out with any needs or questions.

  5. The Employer Outreach Supervisor will perform one site visit per internship to ensure that the internship is going well.

  6. All hired interns are able to partake in professional development workshops held over the summer.

  7. All hired interns who successfully complete their internship, and their employers, are invited to an End of Summer Luncheon to celebrate everyone’s successes.
